Are Women Safer Drivers Than Men?

By Ann-Marie Price

Insurance companies certainly recognise women as safer drivers and are adjust their premiums accordingly. The first insurance company to insure women only drivers was Diamond, back in1997; it wasn't until 2000 that they came to us through the internet. Sheila's wheels are another leading women only insurer; they hit the market in 2001 with their catchy jingles and humorous adverts.

"Women only" insurance companies are becoming commonplace, with insurers saying they'd rather insure women because they're less likely to make a claim.

And they even proved it. In 2001 after receiving complaints about their advert "Diamond only do car insurers for women because women are better drivers", they managed to establish their statement was accurate. The company provided evidence that suggested women have fewer accidents, are less likely to be involved in fatal accidents and claim for smaller amounts when they do have accidents than men are.

In 1998, a survey from the Automobile Association found men drive faster and break the law more often than their female counterparts, and are more likely to be killed.

However the report also showed - women drivers are twice as likely to have an accident at a junction as a man.

My guess is that one of history's most enduring assaults on reputation - the gender battle will never be resolved no matter how many reports or states are recorded. Neither man nor women that I know off is happy to admit that the opposite sex is the better driver. Men will always pride themselves on being better at parking and reading maps and women will always argue that they are safer drivers.

Nevertheless if you are a female driver and would like to take advantage of cheaper car insurance go online and see what they have to offer in terms of women's car insurance.
