We all have read articles about ways to save on your insurance through joint plans, higher deductibles, good grades, multi car, etc. What about the long term effects? Do you want your teenager to keep being on your policy, or would you like for them to have their own when it comes time. When it comes time to get their own policy, are they going to be prepared?
The first step to making the best of the situation is to talk to your teenager that is looking to get automobile insurance for the first time. Let them know being a new driver is important and comes with many risks. It is a great responsibility to have and when used inappropriately, it can take lives. Also inform them of the financial responsibility of an insurance policy. Most teenagers will realize that it costs quite a bit of money to get an insurance policy, which is why they come to you. In most cases, though, they do not realize exactly how much it costs, how to get one, and never see one of those payments in the time they are covered under their parents. So what does this mean to you?
Get Your Teens Actively Involved in Their Insurance Coverage
After talking with them, it is time to get that policy. At all opportunity, take your teenager with you while you add them on the insurance policy, or get a whole new one for the family. Let them see first hand what auto insurance consists of so they are familiar with the concept. After you have signed on an insurance policy, go home and review it with them. Make sure they understand what each part covers. Then review the cost. Figure out how much adding them on your insurance policy costs. This is the amount they are responsible for. If they cannot pay this amount monthly due to school, etc. work out a payment plan that still calls for them to make a payment every month. If a job is unattainable due to circumstances, then they should do work around the house, etc. to compensate for the amount due.
Another aspect at saving on auto insurance for teens is their grades. In order to maintain insurance, they need to understand it is important they maintain their grades along with making their monthly payment. With privilege comes responsibility. Unfortunately, it is common nowadays, to forget this simple yet important saying. By making sure these steps are taken, you will be helping your teenager learn responsibility, money management, and the importance of grades. It gives incentive to work harder and makes them appreciate this opportunity rather than take advantage of it. Not only does it provide those things, it saves you money on your new teenagers insurance and gives you some comfort that you are doing everything in your power to create a safe and responsible driver.
