Do You Have to Buy Car Insurance?

By Samantha Asher

In an ideal world, nobody would get into car accidents because everyone would follow the traffic laws and nobody would make mistakes. Unfortunately, we don't live in an ideal world. We do get into accidents and we do have to pay for the damages they cause. In order to pay for the damages of these accidents, we buy car insurance.

When you start driving, you usually search through car insurance policies to find the right company. You look for the cheapest one with the best coverage. If you are lucky, the cheapest policy you find has plenty of coverage for you. Usually this is not the case because often cheap insurance companies forgo quality to lure you in with a cheap price. Either way, when you get a car, you get insurance.

Do you have to buy car insurance? If you live in the United States, you do have to buy car insurance. You can't have a car on the road that is not insured. This not only causes problems for you in an accident, but with the other person if there was someone else involved. When you get into a car accident with another vehicle involved, both insurance companies, or the same one if you both have the same insurance company, have to communicate and arrange payments. Without insurance, you will have to pay a lot of money and you will get into a lot of trouble.

Insurance will save you money over time. Let's say you are paying $100 a month to insure one car. Over the course of two years you pay $2,400. Then, let's say you get into a car accident, and your car and the other car are totaled. If it was your fault, you would have to pay for the damages, or considering they are totaled, you will have to pay the value of the car. If the value of both cars is $10,000, you would be covered under insurance and wouldn't have to pay it, unless you had to pay a deductible. Let's say you do have to pay a $500 deductible. Over two years, you pay $2,400 plus the $500 deductible. If you didn't have insurance, you wouldn't have paid the $2,400, but you would have had to pay the $10,000 and you would pay $7,100 more. That is a huge savings if you had insurance.

You might argue that you are a great driver and will never get into an accident. Well, the fact is, even if you are a great driver, other people still do stupid things and there's still a chance you could get into an accident. Even if you never get into an accident, the insurance you pay will give you peace of mind and, let's face it, it's the law!
