American Auto Insurance

By Tom K. Kelly

The annual cost of American auto insurance will differ from one insurance company to the next, so you will need to shop around if you want to make sure you are getting the best deal. Information about American auto insurance companies is available online as well as through insurance agents and each State's insurance department. Consumer magazines and rating companies also provide insurance providers in the United States.

American auto insurance is designed to protect the person that is insured from financial harm as a result of an accident. When comparing various providers it is important to pick a company that is financially stable. This can be accomplished by checking with companies such as A.M. Best and Standard & Poor's.

To make sure that you are getting the best rate on your auto insurance you will want to request quotes from multiple companies. It's a good idea to check with different types of insurance companies. Some companies sell through their own branches, whereas others sell through independent agents who offer coverage from many insurance companies. Other companies sell directly to the consumer over the phone or via the internet.

When comparing American auto insurance companies, price is not the only determining factor to consider. Stability and service should also play into your decision. Begin your search by obtaining recommendations from friends, family and co-workers. Once you have a list, check with your State's department of insurance to see if they have received any consumer complaints for any of those companies.

If you are considering the purchase of a car, check into the insurance costs before you finalize your decision. Insurance premiums are based in part on the car's value, safety rating, potential repair expenses, and the chances of theft based on statistics for each make and model. Also check to see if the providers offer discounts for features that reduce the risk of theft or injury.

Here is a list of additional ways you may be able to reduce the cost of American auto insurance:

Request higher deductibles (what you pay before the insurance policy kicks in). Be sure you have money set aside if you end up needing it.

Consider dropping collision and/or comprehensive insurance coverage on older vehicles that are no longer worth much. Typically you will need to own the vehicle free and clear to do this.

If you buy two or more types of insurance (such as renter's or homeowners insurance) from the same company you may get a discount.

Maintain a good credit record. Many insurance providers use credit information in part to determine the premium of auto insurance policies.

Some companies offer discounts to people that drive lower than average miles or who car pool to work.

Some insurers offer discounts through group plans with employers, professional associations, business and alumni groups, or other organizations.

Policyholders who have not had any accidents or moving violations for a long time often receive discounts.

Young drivers who get good grades and take a drivers education course are often eligible for a discount.

Young drivers who are at college out of the area without a car, you may also qualify for a lower rate.
