Teenage Drivers - Finding Cheap Auto Insurance For Your Teen Driver

By Laura Caldwell

As teenagers began to get their permits, and then their licenses they also need to get auto insurance. However, I'm sure you have stopped to consider the price you will have to pay. No doubt your premiums will increase when adding a teen driver to the policy. And if the teen is a male, then expect an even greater increase as male teenage drivers are among the most expensive to insure.

Here are some things to consider when getting car insurance for a teenage driver.

1. The Type of Vehicle They will be Driving: Some vehicles are more expensive to insure than others. The minivan that your teenager is embarrassed to drive will be a lot cheaper to insure than the sports car he is begging for. Cars that are more likely to be stolen or are more expensive to repair than others are also more expensive to insure. Also, make sure the car is equipped with safety features as many companies offer safe car discounts.

2. The Report Card: Did you know that getting good grades in school can lower the cost of insurance for a teenage driver? Many car insurance companies give good student discounts for teenagers who have good grades.

3. The Driving Record: Let your teen driver know how important it is to keep their driving record clear of violations. Car insurance companies take into account how many speeding tickets, traffic violations, etc. that you have had when determining your car insurance rates. This is one way to make sure that your rates don't dramatically increase.

When shopping for car insurance it is always important to take the time to do some research and shop around. If you are adding a new driver to your policy, it will be beneficial to you to compare quotes from multiple insurance companies to see which can offer you the best rate on your car insurance policy.
